Entering God’s Rest (Part 1)

30 Apr 2016 Saturday Service – Kong Hee

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt 11:28

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
Psa 23:1-2

What is rest?

Rest is confidence, peace  great belief that everything is already promised, prepared and provided for us. Rest is the greatest expression of faith.

It means we believe in trust in the Lord, that we won’t sweat about the future and what God will do.

6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. Heb 3:6

Confidence is Parrhesia (Gr), which means all outspokenness

14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,

35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.

Heb 3:14, 10:35

Don’t lose your confidence!

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
Heb 3:7-8

Don’t worry, just trust. Learn to rest. Just love God. If you love Him then trust Him. If you trust Him enough, don’t worry.

They shall not enter my rest
9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’”
Heb 3:9-11

God was so angry that He swore to that generation they will not enter His rest. And that generation wandered around for 40 years. All because that generation just couldn’t believe God was good, that God could deliver them, that God could provide for them.

We must not repeat the unbelief of the Israelites.

Everything we need for our life, from now to eternity, is available for us right now from God.

By doing nothing and resting, Jesus Christ now becomes the hope of our glory, and He becomes the in charge over our lives!

We must be careful not to have an evil heart of unbelief, because if we don’t believe then God will not let us experience His work and power at hand.

12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; Heb 3:12

Eg, relying on top doctors or our own abilities, and not trusting or believing in God.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
Lk 4:18

30 who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. Mk 10:30

13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Heb 3:13

3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:

“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; Heb 4:3-4

Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. Gen 2:1-3 – He rested because there was nothing more to do! It’s finished!

God made man on the 6th day. God didn’t let man show up until everything was prepared for man.

So we don’t have to work?

Of course not! We still need to work. Work is a good thing.

Work is the only way to

  • Develop our gifts
  • Unleash our potential
  • Serve one another
  • Add value to society

Adam had a job before he had a wife! Do our best and trust God to do the rest.

What God is against is TOIL! Toil destroys the rest of God.

Toil is the result of sin and disobedience. Sin breaks the rest of God.

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life. Gen 3:17

Toil is hard, exhausting, continuous labor marked by strife, struggle, weariness and pain.

Are you working or toiling?

So we toil so hard that our bodies are breaking down?
That our marriage is breaking up.
That our ministry is no longer breaking through.
That you have so much pain and depression you’re not breaking free.

Work vs Toil

Work is useful, provides pleasure and hope

Toil is useless, provides pain, frustration, hopelessness

26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Matt 16:26

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; Matt 6:28

Toil is kopiao (Gr) which means physically overworked, emotionally fatigued

If we stress, God will rest.
If we rest, God will work.

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matt 11:28-30

Work in rest! We will work but not overwork. God will do the rest.

11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. Heb 4:11

Be diligent to enter God’s rest!
