Practise Resurrection

07 Feb 2015 Service – Tan Ye Peng

11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Rom 8:11

10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. Jn 10:10

Eugene H Paterson, the author of Practise Resurrection

“Though bringing people to new birth in Christ through evangelism is essential, says Eugene Peterson, isn’t growth in Christ equally essential? Yet the American church by and large does not treat Christian maturity and character formation with much urgency.”

It’s always easier to say the grass is always greener on the other side.
It’s always easier to wish your marriage is like that person’s marriage, or wished your family is like that family.

Maybe God knows why He’s putting you where you are. Ask God why does He put you here, not why did it happen.

#1. The Holy Spirit is a giver of life to the resurrection community.

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. Lk 1:13-15

41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Lk 1:41

The Holy Spirit is at work! Even babies can feel it!

67 Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: Lk 1:67

Simeon Sees God’s Salvation
25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: Lk 2:21-28

#2 The Holy Spirit comes with power upon the resurrection community.

A word in isolation doesn’t give you the right context. Read it in context of the story, not from a dictionary.

35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Lk 1:35

Power can mean many things, in different contexts:
In Physics.. Work done
In Maths.. Product obtained..
In Optics..  Magnifying capacity of a scope
In Electrical… Measurement of electricity
In Politics…  Have authority and influence

Holy Spirit power brings life to a virgin woman!

Read it in the context and understand what God is saying!

14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. Lk 4:14-15 – He taught..

He uses the power he now has after 40 days in the wilderness.

His power was used in relation to people… Always about the peopl.

To heal the sick, perform miracles, etc. He is always personal and relational.

#3 The Holy Spirit is the personal helper to the resurrection community.

28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.” Jn 16:28

I am sending…It is to your advantage that I go away.

His leaving is not Him abandoning us, but so His personal helper can come to us. It’s God’s way of being present with us. To continue the work and life of Jesus Christ here on earth.

Readings:
Jn 13:14
Jn 13:34 15:15
14:12
14:16-17
14:19
14:25-26
16:7
16:25-27

He’s now doing his work in thousands of believers! If this is the Holy Spirit’s work, Then what must we do?

We need to be present. To be around when the Holy Spirit comes. Be present in church, church! This is the presence of God, this is where the Holy Spirit comes!

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Lk 1:38

Practise Resurrection in its reality. In its ruling on and reigning with Christ. Having victory over evil. Overcoming evil with good.

Evil happens around us, evil will happen to us. It is the question of how do we respond to this, how do we practise Resurrection? Not why did it happen to me. Why is there evil in the world? Why?

What do you now do when you now know someone lost his job, or diagnosed with cancer, or going through a crisis, or a divorce, etc.

It’s what you do now, not why. Because what you do now is practising resurrection.
