Conquering The Giant

17 Jan 2015 Service – Dr Robi Sonderegger and Leo Bigger

The king was shocked that David a young shepherd boy would volunteer to and believe that he could defeat the giant. Who did he think he was? Goliath was learning the art of war even since before he was born!

But David knew who he was.

Words are powerful. The universe was formed by God’s words. And not just God’s words, but our words. But when God formed us, He formed us with His hands, not Words.

God speaks life. He spoke life into His son, this is my son!

Everything is risky! You can eat well and healthy but a fall can even kill you. Are we willing to take a risk that counts, that matters??

God has commissioned you and I to conquer the giants of this world.

No matter how prepared we think we are, there will always be people who will tear us down.
Even the King tore down David. What was David’s response??

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!” 1 Sam 17:34-37

In the same way, you and I are exactly in that same position. Note what did David did not do next. He did not go to train. You are already prepared.

“I have already conquered.. ” -David

God has been preparing each and every one of us for the giants that we are facing right now. Prepared from all the experiences that we had in the past. Preparation is all about positioning. Are you well positioned? Positioned in your attitude to conquer this giant, positioned that its not your strength but the strength of God, and the position to be well led, by the Holy Spirit, what to do, how to do it, when to do it.

When it comes to conquering the giant, the question comes.. what is in your hand?

But not only that, what do we need to take off?

The king gave David his armor, but David could barely walk with the armor on. People will give you extra burden, you need to take them off.

In essence, you are ready just the way you are. You don’t have to be like somebody else. Once you are in the right position, then you are ready to conquer the giant.

Preparation = Positioning

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. James 1:2-3

Endurance is not the same as Perseverance.

Perseverance is the activity and engagement of something. Endurance is being obedient for what God wants you to do.

To be faithful is to be obedient to the instruction given. For eg, being faithful in a marriage is not just not sleeping around with other people. Perseverance is the step by step process of loving her even if that process may seem mundane or boring.

What kind of man do you want to be? What kind of leader do you want to be? When you are fighting your battles secretly, you will see your results publicly. If you notice, the complaining takes place in public, from most people like friends, etc.

What you do in secret is the definition of your character.

David conquered the lion and bear when there was no one else there to see it.

Perseverance is also staying true to who you are. Don’t lower your standards.

Goliath hurled vulgarities to David, but David didn’t lower his standards and hurl back vulgarities. Instead he stayed true to who he was and focused on his goal.

Don’t look at how big your giant is, look at how big your God is!

Many theologians believe that those 5 smooth stones were symbolic for the 5 giants that David would ultimately have to conquer; there were 4 other giants that were related to Goliath.

Because after David slayed Goliath, there just might be another giant to take his place. David was prepared.

After reaching the summit of the mountain.. conquering the first giant… now you have the second giant… going down again..

Sometimes in our life, we conquer a big giant, and all of a sudden, a bigger giant comes standing in front of you. We ask, God have we done something wrong? No, every giant in your life , you are prepared to conquer. God is on your side.

Whenever you think you have no more energy left, rely on the Holy Spirit. It is the grace of God that we even get to breathe today.

We need to have a new perspective in prevailing. We need to know that everyday presents new challenges.

You might get well soon but you will get sick again in the future! Exams done? Exams will come again.

Don’t just conquer the giant, position yourself to be a conqueror. Don’t just attempt to win, position yourself to be a winner. Not just once, but always!

If we see the whole picture then we would probably freak out and not undertake it or give up. That’s why God reveals it in pieces and phases. For eg, if you already knew you would be a successful doctor with great riches and wealth, then you wouldn’t work hard now because you know what is your destiny. Or if you knew you were going to die within a week, you would change the way you lived for the next 7 days.

God could have caused Goliath to drop dead any moment, but instead he chose a shepherd boy to work with.

It’s not about conquering the giant, it’s about the process.

There is a king or queen that God is itching to bring out of you!
