The Transition Generation

03 Jan 2015 Service – Paul Scanlon

Everything Has Its Time
3 To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
Eccl 3:1

Winter is the toughest season. We adapt and survive through winter. We change our dressings, how we live and cook, etc.

But we have no knowledge of a transition season, there is no guide, we are lost not knowing what to do. Hence most of us don’t survive it Then we experience fear, disorientation, pain, negativity, panic etc

For example: Point of transition – child birth

The mom experiences pain and panic and fear, as she goes through this process.

The baby doesn’t understand why it’s being pushed out of a fantastic place (free food, water, doing nothing etc), we know it needs to get out to grow into what we know as the beginning of life. But to the baby it feels like you’re killing him.

The midwife is trained and experienced and knows how to guide the mom and baby. She knows in a few moments time the baby will be born and well.

In transition most of us are the baby or the mom, few of us are the midwife. We either go through a roller-coaster of emotions and panick, or feel like the situation is killing us. We seldom think like the midwife.

In every sorrow there is a seed. It’s not right to move on from the sorrow and talk about it all ur life, forgetting that somewhere in the sorrow you’re supposed to pick something up. Go back and collect the seed if you have forgotten it!

Don’t see the season of transition as unfortunate and bad calling but see it as a privilege, highly favored by God to be called upon in this time and still alive chosen for a time as this. A chosen generation are a bridging generation. This generation will create a bridge between the old and new, the past and future.

In a war, the first things to get bombed are bridges. Because you disrupt flow, of advance, reinforcements, supply etc. The enemy wants to take your bridges out, wants to take you out.

If we can keep the bridge intact, the transition generation intact, then there is the continuity of God’s people.
If you start the new year but keep the old you, you’re just changing dates. We move across a dateline but mentally we didn’t progress and grow.

The transition is internal, mental, spiritual and emotional.

What defeated the children of Israel wasn’t Pharaoh but a slave mentality that they couldn’t be free.

Qn: Do you believe you were born in the right time?

26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. Acts 17:26 NIV

When you think you’ve started something isn’t the time when God started it. In fact God is immune to processes.
God is not the child or mom, He is the mid wife, He is totally in control. Even when you think you are not. Instead of thinking “Wow God must think so highly of us to be chosen as a generation out of 17 generations to be called for this“, they had a slave mentality and died in the wilderness.

God sent Joseph into Egypt 20yrs in advanced.
God sent Esther into Persia as a teenager.

You are God’s supply for a demand called transition. This is your transition, your season, your shift. You are called for as a time like this. Step up and fulfil your calling!

The devil tries to intimidate us and make us collapse, causing continuity to break.

In the OT, they used to make bricks with straw to strengthen it.

Exodus 5: Their supply of straw dropped but the order didn’t change.

The devil will try to control your straw, it’s your binding agent to the bricks. It’s the stuff that binds you together and give you hope and build life. The devil will try to intimidate you and attack your joy and faith and condemn you.
The devil wants you to get so mad that you become the generation that wants to get out of here. Don’t let him rob you of your joy and faith and confidence and conviction.

If the enemy can’t stop you from leaving, he’ll settle for you leaving with a distraction. The distraction was the men can go but the women can’t go. You are free but ur not free. You’re going forward but looking backward at the same time. The devil can’t stop you from moving on, so he tries to distract you.

The enemy wants you to leave 2014 and your season empty handed

35 Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing. Exo 12:35

21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed. Exo 3:21…. Replace “Egyptian” with “past” !

And I will give this people favor in the sight of the PAST; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed

Take out from the past. Plundering is purpose driven, it’s getting things which you need for what you have to do next. It’s not taking things that you like.

When you arrive and get to the event where you’re dressed for, you fit in cos everyone there is dressed the same.
But in transition, as you leave home and go to the event, there is a gap, a transition, where you look ridiculous and out of place (eg, suit for wedding on the train). No one believes what you say, they look at you weirdly and judgingly.

Sometimes as christians, our beliefs, virtues and actions don’t fit in with others. They think we are ridiculous and weird, and judge us. Along the way you meet people like that, but it doesn’t matter as long as you get to the end destination.

Dress for your future!
