Peace On Earth, Goodwill Towards Men

27 Dec 2014 Service – Tan Ye Peng

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Lk 2:14

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Lk, 4:18-19
Don’t drive out your enemies, love them. Jesus message was a message of peace but they rejected it.

12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: Lk 6:12-13

Twelve Apostles is symbolic to represent God’s renewed people.

Apostles means sent out ones. When you enter into a country, you become influenced by that country. You will be treated differently by people.

When you become a Christian, people will treat you differently. Some will mock you, some will hate you.
But blessed are you because great is your reward in heaven.

8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; Lk 19:8-9

Like businessmen who used to have 2 accounts. Now have one, they earn lesser, but blessed are they now.

22 Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake. Lk 6:22

It’s not because of you but who you align yourself to – Jesus

Dan 7:

7 “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.

Vision of the Ancient of Days
9 “I watched till thrones were put in place,
And the Ancient of Days was seated;
His garment was white as snow,
And the hair of His head was like pure wool.
His throne was a fiery flame,
Its wheels a burning fire;
10 A fiery stream issued
And came forth from before Him.
A thousand thousands ministered to Him;
Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.
The court was seated,
And the books were opened.
11 “I watched then because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking; I watched till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

13 “I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.
14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.
Dan 7:7-14

24 “But woe to you who are rich,
For you have received your consolation.
27 “But I say to you who hear:
Love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you,
Lk 6:24, 27

Instead of doing evil to those who do evil to you, do good to them. Go beyond and love your enemies.

29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Lk 6:29

If we leave and enter every year the same way without enlarging ourselves then we have not grown with maturity.
We need to change our mindset and thinking.

31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. 32 “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Lk 6:31-32.. Credit here refers to grace. If you love those who love you, what grace is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.

But that’s not fair! We have this idea that grace and fairness cannot co-exist.
Lk 3:

4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled
And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”
John Preaches to the People
7 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 So the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?”

11 He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”

12 Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”

14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?”

So he said to them, “Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”
Now both would have one tunic. This act of grace now leads to… Fairness. Both have tunics now.
Those of us who have.. Share with those who don’t. Every valley shall be filled and mountain and hill brought low.
Valley filled = the one receiving tunic
Mountain and hill brought low = giving tunic

35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Lk 6:35… He is kind to the unthankful and evil..

V36: 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Sons of the most high.. Most high in what way? His mercy is the most high. So how do you represent Jesus as God’s renewed people? To show grace and mercy.

V37-38:37: “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Instead of judging their enemies (romans, tax collectors etc)

V31:.And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

Just as You want.. If you remove you want…read the verse.. There will be chaos. So the way you want others to treat you is important here.

Good measure.. It’s like a balancing scale. You need to put in more or take out more to balance.

Measure properly: How do u know what is a good or bad measure? Who is your standard? Jesus!

V39: 39 And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?

If you are properly trained by your teacher, you will be like him. You know how much grace to give, like how Jesus would.

19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. Lk 5:19

What would happen today if someone was lowered down the roof? We would be thinking what’s going on, what is disturbing the norm, disturbing the service.

Jesus doesn’t see the problem.. He sees the person’s faith!
We really do need to change the way we look at things. We are often too petty and sensitive. We judge people’s sins. We don’t have a good measure.

27 After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” Lk 5:27

Who you follow is very important!
#1 In the way you see.. See with MERCY.

41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? Lk 6:41

This plank is where you have not exercised grace and mercy. Parents, how do you see your children? Do u see them with patience? Maybe you need to reevaluate your measure. More grace, kindness? Less judgement and unforgiveness?

Usually our offenses come from people we have expectations of. And we get easily offended when they don’t live up to their expectations.

Today if you are serving with Jesus would you be offended by the way he does things?
Eg storm in the sea and Jesus was sleeping. Sometimes we see our leaders slacking while we are working hard. Or pre-empting Jesus that there was no food expecting him to do something. But He instead asks the disciples to go feed them themselves.

They think He is not the leader that they were expecting.. But in each of the situation Jesus wants the disciples to respond in faith, not complaining and grumbling. See in good measure.. Respond in faith, don’t see your situation in a sour attitude.
#2 in the way you speak.. Speak with GOODNESS.

43 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Lk 6:43-45

If we don’t make effort to store good in us, there will only be evil. What is good? The word of God.
The WOG is not meant for you to just glance through, but eat it and align the way you think. Only then will the good treasures come forth.

Do not repay evil with evil but overcome it with good. There is no way we will think like that without the WOG.
#3 in all the you do… Be like Jesus.

47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” Lk 6:47-49

When you build your foundation you need to hit the rock at the bottom..good ground. We need to connect with God our rock.

36 Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’” Lk 5:36-39

The person who drinks the old will not desire the new because he thinks the old is better… Technology advances..
Eg From horse carriage, to steam trains, to cars..

No one repairs horse carriages now.. The old cannot fit..
So what is the new thing that Jesus is introducing here? Grace and mercy. Reaching out to sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes… The old cannot fit.

The new age is breaking in, and it’s a time of forgiveness and love and grace and mercy!
