Tithing: The Trigger of Faith

25 Oct 2014 Service – Kong Hee

The blessing of Abraham

13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Gal 3:13-14

18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:

“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”
And he gave him a tithe of all.
Gen 14:18-20

#1. The blessing of ELEVATION.

16 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people. Gen 14:16

El elyon – God most high

#2. The blessing of POSSESSION.

19 And he blessed him and said:

“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth; Gen 14:19 – Possessor of heaven and earth!

#3. The blessing of DOMINION.

20 And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. Gen 4:20

Abraham received those blessings by triggering them by faith in FAITH.

Why do we tithe?

1. For HONOUR.

Tithing is a powerful way of honoring God.When we give God our tithe (10%), we are telling God in no uncertain terms, “Lord everything I have is Yours.”

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17

9 Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
Prov 3:9-10

5 As soon as the commandment was circulated, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of grain and wine, oil and honey, and of all the produce of the field; and they brought in abundantly the tithe of everything. 2 Chr 31:5

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. Matt 22:37-38

22 And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.” Gen 28:22

Acknowledge that God is the source of every good gift!

If we desire to stay connected to God’s house, we must put “a part of our treasure” – our tithe – in our church. Every month, when we work out our tithes, we are reminded of the faithfulness of God. When we give toward our church, it locks our hearts to our Lord Jesus and the vision He has given to us.

18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deut 8:18

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:21

The first time the word ‘love’ and ‘worship’ appear in the Bible, it has to do with Abraham’s giving (Gen 22)

Abraham was so willing to give his son Isaac to the Lord because in his heart, he loved and worshipped the Lord. God Himself demonstrated this same love to us – He gave us His only begotten Son. Like giving the tithe, God gave Jesus Christ to express His love and devotion for us.

1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”

And he said, “Here I am.”

2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”

12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Gen 22:1-5, 12-18

7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Pet 3:7

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Ex 20:12

32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Rom 8:32

They have to be tested.

Honor your wife in greek.. means giving valuables to your wife.

What happens to the tithe and offering that is collected in the House of God every week? The Bible spells out three uses of the tithe we bring to God.

The 3 Uses

A. MANPOWER of God’s House (In-reach)

Tithes are used to pay the wages of the full-time workers in the House of God.

21 As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will compensate them for their service in the Tabernacle. Instead of an allotment of land, I will give them the tithes from the entire land of Israel. 24 because I have given them the Israelites’ tithes, which have been presented as sacred offerings to the Lord. This will be the Levites’ share. That is why I said they would receive no allotment of land among the Israelites.” Num 18:21, 24 NLT

10 I also discovered that the Levites had not been given their prescribed portions of food, so they and the singers who were to conduct the worship services had all returned to work their fields. 11 I immediately confronted the leaders and demanded, “Why has the Temple of God been neglected?” Then I called all the Levites back again and restored them to their proper duties. 12 And once more all the people of Judah began bringing their tithes of grain, new wine, and olive oil to the Temple storerooms.

13 I assigned supervisors for the storerooms: Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites. And I appointed Hanan son of Zaccur and grandson of Mattaniah as their assistant. These men had an excellent reputation, and it was their job to make honest distributions to their fellow Levites.

14 Remember this good deed, O my God, and do not forget all that I have faithfully done for the Temple of my God and its services. Neh 13:10-14 NLT

B. MINISTRY of God’s House (Up-reach)

In our modern day context, the tithes provide for the ministry and events of the church that help people grow in their walk with God.

23 Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship—the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored—and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and herds. Doing this will teach you always to fear the Lord your God. Deut 14:23 NLT

C. MISSION of God’s House (out-reach)

This was also called the tithe for the lost and needy, in other words, for evangelism and missions.

28 “At the end of every third year, bring the entire tithe of that year’s harvest and store it in the nearest town. 29 Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all your work. Deut 14:28-29 NLT

When we are faithful to tithe as God’s people, we will trigger seven great blessings of God (Mal 3:10-12)

The Seven Benefits

1. Strong church (Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house)
2. Open heaven (If I will not open for you the windows of heaven)
3. Success (And pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it)
4. Victory over Satan (And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes)
5. Productive career (So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground)
6. Prospering investment (Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field)
7. Global influence & legacy (And all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land)
