In Hope Believe

Rev Bobby Chaw

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”[a] 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. Rom 4:18-21 NIV

Background of the situation..
Christians and Jews were heavily persecuted by Emperor Nero

Paul was reminding them to rejoice in hope, to not give up.

How God revealed himself in hope..

11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. Gen 2:11

Pishon means hope
Havilah means suffering

Everytime you’re suffering, God will bring a river of hope!

When you put gold into water, it turns red (Colloidal suspension). When the river of hope comes, it comes in red!

Children of Israel was suffering for over 400 years..

First plaque… River Nile turned red
To the Egyptians the red river was a curse but to the Israelites it was hope!

New Testament
End of OT to NT was 400 years of silence.

the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned. Matt 4:16 NIV

When Jesus came, the first thing they did was to go to a wedding.

The first miracle Jesus did was turning water into wine. Wine is red in color.

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. Jn 2:11

End of Jesus’s ministry
Jesus was hanging on the cross.
33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. Jn 19:33-34

God is a God of hope! Against all hope, in hope we must believe.

Finish the race

Pst Zhuang

21 testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. 24 But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself,[a] so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Acts 20:21-24 – None of these things move me!

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Tim 4:7

Fight the good fight. Finish the race. Keep the faith

10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 2 Tim 3:10

11-13 Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality. Rom 12:12 MSG

Faith for endurance

Pst Aries

10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”

And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah. 1 Sam 16:10-13

David was already predestined to become king.

So when Samuel anointed David, then what was the anointing for?
Only 15 yrs later then David became king. And during this time he endured 21 different trials.

Whenever you have a problem, don’t just pray for protection, pray for perspective. Pray to see things in God’s perspective.

The anointing is not for protection or promotion, it’s for endurance, for perseverance.

2 things that happened to David:

#1 God did not forget David, He was reserving him!

#2 God never forgets, He is reserving us for a special day, a special occasion!

You are not being left out, you are being set apart!
