Because I’m Happy

Because I’m Happy

09 Aug 2014 Service – Phil Pringle

Happiness is popular in the world because so many people are depressed. Don’t excuse yourself from happiness.

Roadblocks to happiness.
Why u can be happy
And why you should be happy!

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.Matthew 5:3-12… Blessed also means happy!

Blessed are those who mourn..? How can this be?

Happiness is not laughter all the time, it’s not comedy. It’s a deeper feeling that connects you with the communion in Christ.

The opposite of happiness is depression. Depression is of of the greatest factors of sicknesses.

Even in laughter the heart may sorrow,
And the end of mirth may be grief. Prov 14:13

11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: Phil 4:11

You have to learn to be a happy person. It’s not something that just falls on you. Learn how to change gear in life and not just be one dimensional in life. Smile and be happy not just in good times but bad times. Learn to abound and abase.

The world tells you you will be happy if you get that latest bag but you won’t be, ‘cos someone will have a brand newer one than you!

When you are always wanting, you are never going to be a content person.

Daniel Larson has found in a research and found “some positive association…between religious involvement and greater happiness, life satisfaction, morale, positive affect, or some other measure of well-being.  A review of the research shows that Religion significantly affects the level of an individual’s happiness and overall sense of well-being. In other words, higher levels of religion makes you happier and less depressed!

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Psa 91:1

God blesses you so that you can enter into a relationship with Him, not just so you can enjoy your life.

Dr Martin Seligman is the world’s leading authority on optimism and happiness. He wrote a ground breaking book Learned Optimism (Knopf, 1991) and followed that up with (amongst others) Authentic Happiness (Random House, 2002).

In Authentic Happiness (page 177 & 178) Seligman wrote this about the importance of optimism for achieving high performance:
‘The pessimist views bad events as pervasive, permanent and uncontrollable, while an optimist sees them as local, temporary and changeable. Pessimism is maladaptive in most endeavours: Pessimistic life agents sell less and drop out sooner than optimistic agents. Pessimistic undergraduates get lower grades, relative to their SAT scores and past academic record, than optimistic students. Pessimistic swimmers have more substandard times and bounce back from poor efforts worse than optimistic swimmers. Pessimistic pitchers and hitters do worse in close games than optimistic pitchers and hitters. Thus pessimists are losers on many fronts’
Optimists are people magnets. People like to be in the company of an optimist. Emotional Intelligence author, Daniel Goleman’s research proves that optimistic leaders more easily retain talented people compared to leaders who more often display negative moods.
Optimism and associated good moods create positive feelings about work. Good moods have also been proven to greatly improve people’s speed in; understanding complex information, making effective decisions and thinking more creatively.
Optimism builds resilience. Pessimists as more likely to give up sooner or not to try at all, compared to optimists.’

Learn the art of being content!

Roadblocks to happiness:

1. HATRED
You cannot hate someone and be happy

11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 Jn 2:11

Saul hated David so much and became negative and depressed; throwing spears in his house etc. The answer to his depression was music, which ironically was David.

Listen to music, worship! It will cause joy to rise inside of you, it will lift up the depression. But the music only deals with the symptoms, not the root!! The root problem of hatred never went out of Saul’s life.

which leads to..

2. ANGER
You can’t be angry and happy at the same time.

Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.
Psa 27:3

If you have anger you create a heavy atmosphere.

Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,
For anger rests in the bosom of fools.
Eccl 7:9

Depression comes from unresolved anger. Make no room for anger and fear in your life!

There was this guy who was scared of monsters hiding under bed at night, since childhood. And even when he was an adult he still had that fear. In the end he cut off the bed legs so there was nothing between the bed and the floor, and his fear was gone!

5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. Gen 4:5

Instead of being humble, Cain is controlled by sin.

20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Jas 1:20

Mature Christians don’t need to forgive. Because it’s not even registered in their lives! Love takes no account of any wrong!

1 A soft answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.
18 A wrathful man stirs up strife,
But he who is slow to anger allays contention.
Prov 15:1, 18

He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Prov 16:32

24 Make no friendship with an angry man,
And with a furious man do not go,
25 Lest you learn his ways
And set a snare for your soul.
Prov 22:24-25

3. SELF PITY
People feel the world owes them something when they don’t deliver them. You cannot feel happy when you’re feeling sorry about yourself.

Even Elijah was struggling with depression, the day after he brought the greatest revival in Israel. No one is protected of depression, we are all vulnerable.

3 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”

5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel[a] touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel[b] of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 1 Kings 19:3-7

This was the same prophet who challenged the wizards, in calling down fire. How did such a great man become so small and depressed?

He was tired. Ministry drains alot of energy!

First mistake. He leaves a servant and goes to a town isolate.

When you are depressed, you need sleep and food. God sent an angel to feed Elijah and rest.

It takes more faith to rest than to work. Because then you got to trust God, we think if we stop working how will we survive.

Why did God whisper to Elijah? Because the only way to hear him is to get closer… Get closer… to God.
