Engaging Our Culture

Engaging Our Culture

19 Jul 2014 Service – Kong Hee

In Mark 16:15, to “go into all the world” is the imago Dei — creatively go into all of society.

“Preach the gospel to every creature” is the Missio Dei — our ultimate mission in life.

17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. Jn 3:17

Paul in Athens went to the church, marketplace and Areopagus, or Mars Hill (Acts 17:16-21, Acts 17:28, Acts 17:32-34). He used secular culture as a “bridge” so that he could preach “the good news about Jesus and the resurrection” (Acts 17:18, Acts 17:32-34).

21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing. Acts 17:21

22 to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you. 1 Cor. 9:22-23

14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. 2 Cor. 5:14-15

17 Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17

“Christians should be ‘more evangelical’ about their faith and ‘get out there and make a difference to people’s lives,’ David Cameron has said. In his strongest intervention on religion to date, Mr Cameron said that in an increasingly ‘secular age’ Christians need to be even ‘more confident’ and ‘ambitious.’”

“If Jesus Christ is God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.”- C.T. Studd
A. We are sent on a mission to Engage our Culture
B. We are sent on a mission to Preach the Gospel
C. We are sent on a mission to Live for Jesus

18 In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world. 19 I’m consecrating myself for their sakes So they’ll be truth-consecrated in their mission. John 17:18-19 (MSG)

FOUR WAYS OF RELATING TO THE WORLD

5 Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. 6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished. 7 And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace. 8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. 9 For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says the Lord.

10 For thus says the Lord: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jer. 29:5-11

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

1. Alienation
NOT IN the world, NOT OF the world. Against culture.
Message: “Go away!”

5 Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. 6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished. Jer 29:5-6 …You should be increasing not diminishing. Don’t cut yourself off from the world!

2. Extraction
NOT IN the world, OF the world.Own subculture.
Message: “Come to us!”

“Whatever they have we can do it better”

7 And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace. Jer 29:7

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

3. Accommodation
IN the world, OF the world. Just like culture!
Message: “Come to us — we’re no different from you!”

Liberals.

8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. Jer 29:8…  the proclaimers of popular culture

4. Transformation
IN the world, NOT OF the world. Holy CounterCulture
Message: “We’ll go to you!”

11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. 14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Jn 17:11, 14

11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jer 29:11

Live for Jesus

Holiness is the mark of the kingdom:

6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change;
Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Mal 3:6

8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Heb 13:8

14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: Heb 12:14

We don’t get holy by our own effort.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:19-24
