Engaging The Campus

Engaging The Campus

28 Jun 2014 Emerge Service – Kong Hee

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15Gr. kosmos means “all of society.”

Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) said that as a Christian, we must look at our world as various “Cultural Spheres .”

“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” ~ Abraham Kuyper

The Gospel is to redeem, renew and restore (Col. 1:20; Phil. 2:9-11; 1 Pet. 4:11).

20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. Col 1:20

9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil 2:9-11

11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Pet 4:11

How do we engage the youths?
1. Church

The Church is a Building (1 Pet. 2:5) … the Bride … a Body.

Building to display God’s glory, the bride to display God’s beauty.

You can’t be in community if you’re not close. You can be hurt but you also have surely hurt others. You need to be connected and grow as a body.

How to engage the sphere of church ? Make a decision, choose a church and make it your home ground, to be actively involved and loving the church.

2. Relationships
What kind?
Family. No matter what they are like, you need to honour them. Make a decision to have a good relationship with them.

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Exo 20:12

15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Rom 8:15-16

Friends

Friends A friend sticks with you (Prov. 17:17).
A friend gives you good advice (Prov. 27:9).
A friend acts with integrity (Prov. 3:27-28).
A friend don’t take revenge (Prov. 20:22; Prov. 24:29).
A friend is not quarrelsome (Prov. 17:14; Prov. 20:3).
Romance and sex (1 Cor. 6:18-20).

Grow in the power of singleness. Grow in friendship and holiness.
Be inclusive, not exclusive. Learn to handle breakup well.

3. Academic
Work is Worship.God gave us work so that we can be more like him, through it we can know him more! God gave Adam work before Eve!

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. Gen 2:15

Don’t be lazy or halfhearted in our studies.

23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, Col 3:23

Don’t turn academic success into an idol.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matt 6:33

4. Leadership

Leadership is about Influence.

42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. Mk 10:42-43

5. Partying & Pleasure

“In the world, and not of the world” (John 17:11, John 17:14).

11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me,[b] that they may be one as We are. 14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Jn 17:11, 14

Holy Counterculture : On one hand, we are totally engaging our world; yet, we are so different in our spiritual values and convictions.

God is not against parties! In fact there are many festivals and parties. Like jubilee, feasts etc. God is colorful and loves to party!

We just need to ask ourselves these questions:

What are things we Receive? Reject? Redeem?
Can I honestly glorify God in this?
Is this really good for me?
Does this give life? Does does it exploit?
Who has the influence? The Holy Spirit? Or alcohol, drugs, etc.?
Does this help me love others? (Rom. 14:20).
How this help me to share the Gospel?

There is no such thing as drugs for his glory. Or prostitution for His glory etc.
