The Gospel Of Jesus Christ The King
21 Jun 2014 Service – Tan Ye Peng
Mk 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
What is the gospel? 4 spiritual laws? Black music? Gospel meeting?
Euaggelion (Gr) = gospel = good news glad tidings. Better described as a town cryer, used in relation to a king or Kingdom.
Gospel is an announcement relating to a king or Kingdom.
The gospel of Jesus Christ the king.
13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. 14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, Mk 1:13-14
19 When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. 20 And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.
If Jesus is the king then we in a sense are not kings over our lives. If he’s not Lord of all, he’s not Lord at all.
Then he’s just a king in name.
21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Mk 1:21-22 Why were they astonished? Because He taught them having great authority.
The life of a disciple
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. Mk 8:34
If you want to follow me you have to do a few things:
Take up your cross
There is a certain influence on this generation. A generation that seeks after signs and wonders. Sinful and adulterous generation.
Mk 8:13 – The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod
1. Leaven of the Pharisees
Leaven speaks to us of influence.
What is this leaven of the Pharisees?
An attitude of show me more and more miracles. It is your way of asking God to prove himself.
“God if you do this for me, I will do this for you…. ”
“If this is the girl for me, let me meet her at the bus stop.. ”
Whoever desires to follow me, let him deny yourself.
God has already done enough. The question is, are you willing to worship him? Do you believe he is the Christ the Messiah?
2. Leaven of Herod
The Sinful and adulterous generation.
Mindful of things pleasurable to yourself but not to the things of God.
33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Mk 8:33
When Christ is beneficial to me. As long as he is not king.
It becomes a mutual relationship.
If you keep praying, fasting, confessing, and doing everything that you can to pray for “result A” to happen, and expect result A to be surely given to you by God, then who is really King?
9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Lk 11:9-10... For everyone who asks receives… but He doesn’t say what you will receive!
The reality is if you believe and trust God and let Him be king, then He will give you result B, which will be even better than result A!
If you don’t live for Christ then you live for the world, to gain the world. (but lose your soul)
You cannot serve both God and mammon. You cannot serve two kings.
Put aside these leaven, these things that stand in the way in our relationship with Jesus.
