Who Then Is The Greatest?
22 Mar 2014 Service – Tan Ye Peng
18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Matt 18:1
26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. Matt 20:26 – The answer?
The disciples were not ashamed to ask this question, in fact they were very bold. They left their entire businesses and careers to follow Jesus. They wanted to become great in the Lord.
What about us today? What about you? Do you think of becoming great in life? Or just live the cycle of work, cg, church and home.
26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. Matt 20:26 – Who is the “whoever“? He said among you, so it means not an outsider. Jesus was addressing the disciples. Your social standing on earth doesn’t matter, in the eyes of the world. The disciples were fishermen!
But becoming great in the Kingdom of God. Are you truly a disciple of Jesus Christ? If yes, then what message are you living out and telling the world every day? What is that one thing you live for? What is your lifestyle reflecting?
#1 Jesus sent his disciples to carry over message: The Gospel!
The gospel: Jesus is the Christ, the son of God.
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mk 1:1
The whole old testament zooms in on WHO is the Christ. Not even Abraham, David, Solomon etc. Because He is not just a Savior. He is THE Savior, the one destined from the start. He is the Christ. The Messiah. The deliverer. No one else. And not only the Christ, but the Son of God.
Don’t humanise God too much, because you will look to him as a person, as a friend, and not God.
Matt 9:1-2: So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. 2 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” When he saw their faith.. how? From the fact that they brought him to Jesus, instead of anyone else.
When you have troubles, bring them to Jesus! That is your faith!
Matt 15:21-28: 21: Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”
23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” 24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Her faith was great because of her persistence. Persistent faith in the wrong person is faith in vain, but mustard seed faith in the right person is faith that can move mountains.
It’s not so much about the quantity of faith that makes the difference but the person whom you put that faith in.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. Rom 1:16 – This message will carry you through any storm in your life!
The greatest sign is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Similarly, the greatest signs are when God comes in and resurrects a dead situation in your life.
A true disciple understands the message that you’re carrying.
#2 Ministry Attitude of the disciple
27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?” 28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matt 19:27-28
V24 And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. – All 12 wanted to be great, that’s why they were greatly displeased.
V25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. – You know.. But previously he said you do not know what you ask
No apprentice rebukes the master if he wants to be a true disciple. When Jesus says that you know, humbly accept and know that you do.
The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.’
8 “So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.’ 9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. 11 And when they had received it, they complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.”
Firstly, if not for the landowner, these workers would be standing idle all day and not even have a job (V3 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace). Secondly, the vineyard belongs to the landowner, he can do whatever he pleases.
Ministry is really by grace. Sometimes you stop serving, leave church, because you have an evil eye. Unfair we claim! But we must realize that without Jesus, we would still be lost and standing idle in the world out there.
29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. Matt 19:29
Whoever desires to be great must become a servant. Because Jesus Christ came to serve.
Serve not for positions or benefits, but serve because you are thankful to serve! Don’t have an evil eye.
Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?” Matt 19:27 – Look at Peters attitude! What shall we have? Don’t have this kind of attitude!
Matt 20:32: So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” – The Master asked what can he do for u… What greatness! Let us strive for an attitude like Jesus!
If everyone in the church is asking “What can you give me?”, then it’s going to be hard to build the church. Have an attitude of “What can i do for you!”.
#3 Spiritual Condition of a disciple
Rev 3:16: 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
We cannot be lukewarm! The Bible tells us to be either hot or cold, not to be lukewarm or he will spit us out. Why rather cold than lukewarm? In fact in life we either only drink hot or cold coffee/tea, not lukewarm. Hot symbolises passionate on fire for God, at yourr peak. Cold symbolises weak. So why rather cold than lukewarm? Because when you’re cold, you will be motivated to get hot! But when you’re lukewarm, you’re complacent, you think you know enough and close your mindset and attitude. Don’t be lukewarm for Jesus. If you want to do something, so it excellently!
The spiritual condition of a disciple is always about repenting and coming back to Jesus Christ.
#4 The Life Of A Disciple
