When The Brook Dries Up

When The Brook Dries Up

15 Mar 2014 Service – Rev Dominic Yeo

Without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith is foundational. Faith is the currency used in heaven!

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb 11:1

<Rev Dominic goes on to demonstrate an exercise involving 4 men sitting and lying down on the laps of each other, supporting the structure of four without the use of the chairs>

Faith is putting one’s weight upon. When you stand, you stand wholly on your two feet, you put your weight upon the ground. You put your faith in the ground, faith that it will hold your weight.

1 Kings 17:7-16
7 And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

12 So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’”

15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah.

Note: Elijah prophesied that there will neither be rain nor dew. But there was no reason stated on why.

4 Things That Pertain To Faith When The Brook Dries Up:
#1 Your HEART OF FAITH needs to know that God is up to something greater
6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

Elijah was fed by the ravens.. It was miraculous. (because it’s the raven’s nature to steal, to eat from corpses)
He was fed meat and bread… There was variety.
He was fed everyday… There was consistency.

The blessings came miraculously, in variety, and consistently. Everyday. But what happens when the brook dries up?

7 And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

When the brook dries up in your life, you need to know that God is up to something great.

God’s past records are also God’s future indicators for your life. If God has been good to you in the past, then He will definitely be even better in the future.

God will continue to bless you, He is the same yesterday, today and forever! God is preparing you for something greater, something larger.

When the brook dried up, Elijah had to get up and go to Zarephath. God wants you to leave your comfort zone. He wants you to have a god-movement. God is always about to do something, he just wants you to move along side.

Staying in your comfort zone will only make you a stale christian. You have a great destiny, that’s why the brook will dry up. To move you to the next level, towards your destiny. When the brook dries up, the question is not why, but what! What is God doing in your life!

#2 The EARS OF FAITH must hear God for a miracle
7 And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, … As soon as the brook dried up, the word of God came!

Are you able to hear God’s voice? The ability to do so depends on your proximity to him. If you are near him, you will hear him clearly and easily. If you are far, then you will hear the other things that are surrounding you (distractions, temptations, etc)

In the place of proximity, there is intimacy, which brings revelation into our lives.

#3 The WALK OF FAITH takes us to the blessing|
Go at once to Zarephath for a widow will SUPPLY.
And he went at once. 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.”

In the brook, the ravens were just to feed him. But now it’s to supply! Supply pertains to all your needs, not just food! Feeding can be just for one time, but supply is endless!

The walk of faith often takes us to unlikely places to meet unlikely people.

Unlikely place: Zarephath
Zarephath wasn’t exactly the most ideal place to go to! King ahab married a wicked wife (Queen Jezebel) who killed the prophets, and her hometown is Zarephath. And not only to go there.. But go and stay! This means that his visit was not for just a few hours, but could even stretch up to months!

Unlikely person: The widow
Widows are at the bottom of the social class, they are not the most ideal person to meet. The words ‘widow’ and ‘supply’ are contradicting, because widows are poor! A widow can’t even meet her own needs but yet God said that she will supply for Elijah!

Faith is putting your entire weight on God, on who He is. Upon His nature. Upon His promises.

#4 The EYES OF FAITH sees the accomplished before it happens
V13 the eyes of faith sees the cake, even though the woman doesn’t see it, she knows she doesn’t have enough. – He pushes this woman into the realm of faith!

The eyes of faith doesn’t see what you don’t have, but sees what God has! What God can do for you! And if you have faith and believe, you will receive your breakthrough!

Elijah, the widow and her child had supply everyday!
15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah.
