Praying For Healing

Praying For Healing

30 Nov 2013 Service – Kong Hee

There are at least 9 redemptive names in the Bible. Redemptive names simply means what God will do for us.

One of the earliest redemptive names of God introduced in Scripture is Jehovah Jireh Eg, He will be our provider.

14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide (Jehovah Jireh); as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Next was Jehovah Rapha. In Exodus he introduced himself as the healer.

26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26

#1 God is a Healer
He also brought them out with silver and gold,
And there was none feeble among His tribes.
Psa 105:37

Silver and gold… Provider
None feeble… Healer
God wants us to be healthy. When we are healthy, we are able to be Jesus hands feet face and mouth. We can be a blessing to others, to serve God and others. Our body is a temple of God! If you’re sick all the time, how can you provide for your family? How can you serve God?
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
3 Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
4 Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psa 103:1-5

Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:4

Griefs means sicknesses and diseases
Sorrows means physical pains

#2 Jesus Christ died on the Cross for our Physical Healing

16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.” Matt 8:16, 17

If all of us can receive salvation, then surely all of us can receive healing.

#3 Jesus Christ had a powerful constant healing ministry
The 4 Gospels contain 89 chapters, of which 38 chapters contain verses about healing. Out of 3,779 verses in the 4 Gospels, 727 have to do with healing of physical and mental illnesses. Out of the 28 chapters in the Book of Acts, 10 chapters were about healing encounters.

Matt chapter 4-8 was a 24-hour day in the life of Jesus. Matt 9 was another.

Matt 4:24
24 Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.
.
.
.
Chap 8.. still the same day.
.
.
Healed the leper
3 Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
.
.
Healed a centurion servant
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.
.
.
Healed Peter’s mother-in-law
15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served them.
.
.
Healing service in the evening
16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”

And it’s not a one off event!  The next day it continued.. Jesus was always healing. We serve a healing God!

Matt 9
Healed a paralytic
5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 7 And he arose and departed to his house.
.
.
Healed the woman with the issue of blood
22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
.
.
Raised a girl from the dead
24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
.
.
Healed two blind men
29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened..”
.
.
Healed the mute
32 As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”

And so much more….

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
Jesus healed everyone who came to Him for a miracle. Today, He has given us the Great Commission to do the same!

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mk 16:15, 18

#4 Healing is not always instant
14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. Lk 17:14

Only as they were obeying him did they find themselves being gradually healed

A viper bit Paul, but nothing happened to him!
5 But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 However, they were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god. Acts 28:5-6
8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him. 9 So when this was done, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were healed.

V8
Healed: Gr iaomai means healed instantly!
V9
Healed: Gr therapeuo means healed through medical therapy, or medicine

#5 God uses doctors and medicine to cure sicknesses

12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Matt 9:12

Even Jesus said that doctors are needed for those who are sick.

Satan is the source of all sicknesses. God is the source of all healing.

23 (By the way, this doesn’t mean you should completely give up drinking wine. You ought to take a little sometimes as medicine for your stomach because you are sick so often.) 1 Tim 5:23 TLB

What we need to be careful is when we elevate doctors and medicine above God. Then they become your source. When you are sick, is the first thing that you do is praying to God for healing? Or do you run off to the doctors?

12 And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians. 2 Chr 16:12

He ran to his doctors, died two years later…

As great as medical science is, it can’t cure everything. But we can always go to our ultimate source of healing –  God!

How to receive Divine Healing
#1 Desire
You got to want to get well!
27 When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” Matt 9:27

Do you really think that Jesus did not know there were two blind men there? Why didn’t He heal them before departing? He wanted to test them, to see if they would follow him, and they did!

When it seems sometimes God is ignoring you, it’s just that He’s testing you. How much you really want it, desire it.

The result of your persistence is you will find healing!

#2 Faith
40 Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Mk 1:40-41
5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching. Mk 6:5-6 Unbelief kills the healing power! Faith is needed, not unbelief! There was so much unbelief that Jesus marveled at their unbelief.
He needed to pull the blind man out of the place of unbelief before healing could happen.. There was no place for miracles in that atmosphere.

26 Then He sent him away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.” Mk 8:26

#3 Confession
20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. Matt 9:20

21 For she kept saying to herself, If I only touch His garment, I shall be restored to health. V21 AMP – She kept saying… Kept on confessing.

#4 Prayer
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:14-16

#5 Care
27 For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me. Phil 2:27,30 In this story here, ‘he’ refers to Epaphroditus.

Take good care of yourself, don’t overwork!

BUT what happens when we pray and there’s no healing?

Some Christians don’t want to pray for healing because they are afraid of being disappointed. Afraid that nothing will happen.

But we have to remember that healing comes from God, not man. You don’t need to feel pressured or discouraged.

We know God loves to heal. Healing is in his nature.

So when we have done the best that we have, then we just have to humbly accept that we are not God, and his ways are higher than our ways, that there is a greater purpose behind it.

Submit to the sovereignty of God.

4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Rev 21:4
One day we will all have perfect health when we meet Jesus face to face.
