Don’t Sink The Stewardship
09 Nov 2013 Service – Kong Hee
Our God is so big, he created everything with abundance. There is nothing to fear! There is no shortage in God.
1800 – Whaling blubber shortage and no coal. People thought there were no more resources. But then there was petroleum.
1859 – Petroleum shortage. But then came gas.
1973 – Gas shortage. But then came even newer technologies to harness new resources.
And today… we have discovered that we have much more than enough …
Satan is a liar and accuser, trying to make it look like God created a small world and put too many people inside and didn’t know what to do.
God prospers us based on the Principle of Stewardship.
14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. Matt 25:14
Can He trust us with our giving? What if God asks me to give all my money away??
God is a giver not a taker. God doesn’t test you in the much, but always in the little things. To set you over the much.
20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ V20-23
If you are faithful over a few things… He will make you ruler of many things!
17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ … 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’ Lk 19:17,19
What is the objective of stewardship?
Success, blessings, influence.
Proprietorship or Stewardship?
15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” 16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.
V17-19: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’
…. He was very self centered. Alot of “I’s” and “My’s”
V20:20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
God called him a fool! Because he acted as if he owned everything and was not accountable to anyone. God was not in the equation.
V21:21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Toward God is better translated as “for”.
A steward is just a manager, you manage on behalf of another owner, and that owner is God. You are just a manager, a redistributor of his assets. Everything belongs to God
8 ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. Haggai 2:8
24 The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. Psa24:1
After King David and Israel had given gold and silver worth US$150 billion, he made another personal gift of US$3.8 billion worth of gold and silver.
3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver: 4 three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; 5 the gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be done by the hands of craftsmen. Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?” 1 Chr 29:3-5
18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deut 8:18
God can give you the power to succeed.
“But if I give you that, will you still remember me?
Just a manager, a treasurer and a re-distributor for my Kingdom purposes. Or will you be selfish and self centred and keep it all for yourself?”
2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. 1 Cor 4:2
A steward must be found faithful. How? It can only be through a test. God has to test our stewardship. How willing we are to redistribute to others. Our willingness to give the tithes.
What is the tithe? One tenth, or ten percent of our increase or income.
18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:
“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”
And he gave him a tithe of all.
Gen 14:18-19, 20
22 And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.” Gen 28:22
34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. Gen 41:34
Long before the Law was introduced, the principle of tithing was already in place. When Moses introduced the Law, he was not teaching anything new. He was merely formalizing a principle that was already in place.
Moses taught 3 kinds of tithe:
#1 Tithe for the priests
21 “Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting.24 For the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer up as a heave offering to the Lord, I have given to the Levites as an inheritance; therefore I have said to them, ‘Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.’” Num 18:21,24
#2 Tithe for the feasts (Every 2 weeks)
22 “You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year. 23 And you shall eat before the Lord your God, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always. 24 But if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or if the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, when the Lord your God has blessed you, 25 then you shall exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses. 26 And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household. 27 You shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no part nor inheritance with you. Deut 14:22-27
#3 Tithe for the poor (Once every 3 years)
28 “At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates. 29 And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do. Deut 28-29
37 to bring the firstfruits of our dough, our offerings, the fruit from all kinds of trees, the new wine and oil, to the priests, to the storerooms of the house of our God; and to bring the tithes of our land to the Levites, for the Levites should receive the tithes in all our farming communities. 38 And the priest, the descendant of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive tithes; and the Levites shall bring up a tenth of the tithes to the house of our God, to the rooms of the storehouse.39 For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the grain, of the new wine and the oil, to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are, where the priests who minister and the gatekeepers and the singers are; and we will not neglect the house of our God. Neh 10:37-39
The 7 Blessings when you tithe.
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
11 “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the Lord of hosts;
12 “And all nations will call you blessed,
For you will be a delightful land,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
When you tithe there are 7 blessings:
-Continue to be a blessing to all
-Satan rendered powerless
-Influence and legacy felt all around
DEBT = Done Everything But Tithe.
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Matt 23:23
8 Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives. Heb 7:8 … “Here” in greek means the same spot you are standing now
6 Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Gal 6:6
11 So you shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you. 12 “When you have finished laying aside all the tithe of your increase in the third year—the year of tithing—and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your gates and be filled, Deut 26:11-12
Don’t worry about your finances, don’t give your tithes and offerings based on what you currently have.
22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith? 29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you. Lk 12:22-31
William Colgate, J.C. Penny, Col. Harland Sanders, John D. Rockefellar (richest man ever lived) all tithed.
“I have tithed on every dollar that God has entrusted to me. And I want to say to you that I could have never tithed on my first million if I had not tithed on my first salary of $1.05 a week.” -John D.Rockefellar
Our assets increase by steady addition. It doesn’t happen immediately!
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ Matt 6:31
There is an abundance to meet every need and every finance for his Kingdom purpose.
The prosperity is the purpose of his Kingdom!
6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 2 Cor 9:6-8
The power of multiplication works in giving for kingdom purpose!
9 As it is written:
“He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness
Multiplication, not addition! So we can do even more for his Kingdom!
God promises to add to your personal treasures! God will supply and multiply your seed!
