Sugar Baby (Temptations)

11 Aug 2013 Service – Dr Robi Sonderegger

Excess sugar turns itself into fat. Sucrose is glucose + fructose. Sugar is the brain’s favourite food; leaves carcass in the form of harmful electrons after being metabolised by the brain.

Fructose, gives food its ‘yummy-ness’, the liver metabolizes it and converts to triglyceride fats.

Sugar – everytime you eat it, you want a little more of it. >> Temptation

Watch and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak. Matthew 26:41

Sin found a way to pervert the command into a temptation!
8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. Romans 7:8

“Don’t you remember how it was? I do, perfectly well. The law code started out as an excellent piece of work. What happened, though, was that sin found a way to pervert the command into a temptation, making a piece of “forbidden fruit” out of it. The law code, instead of being used to guide me, was used to seduce me.”

Sometimes, certain action is permissible but not profitable.

(Struggling with Sin) I decide one way, but then I do another, doing things I absolutely despise. Something has gone wrong deep within me. Romans 7:14-24

When we give in to the temptation the flesh lust for, then ultimately we don’t have the energy to move around; the lust becomes habitual.

‘Sugar’/Temptation is an appetite stimulator; it keeps you craving for more

Sex
Sex is just like sugar, releases a pleasure chemical, called dopamine. This is the same reaction pathway that takes place when we take in cocaine. We can be partially dependent on it, or addicted to it.

That is why sex should take place only after marriage. Let’s make sure we do it and consume it the way God wants it. We have to be careful the way we do it, if not, it becomes a forbidden fruit.

Those that are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:8

Therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, … (who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit). Romans 8:1-4

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Galatians 5:16-18

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8

When you pursue the things of the flesh, you have less access to the things of the spirit. If you pursue the things of the spirit, then your appetite for fleshy stuff will diminish.

In other words, if you are still struggling with the flesh and spiritual events, it means that your relationship with God is not doing well.

When you start pursuing God, your wants for the fleshy stuff will no longer be there.

When we have given in to the lust of the flesh, then sin has taken over, is no longer me who is doing it, but sin inside me who is doing it.

Give in to pleasure when you are in pain, after a while, you no longer ask “should i do this/that that gives me pleasure?” but you just go ahead with it, causing it to be habitual.

However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. Romans 4:5-8

The one who works will never be able to get it. We have to pass one step after Acceptance, into the place of Surrender.

God has given us His ONLY Son, His righteousness has been credited to you. And it requires trust to do it. We rely on God’s strength.

God says “Just ASK ME, and I will give you living water, that you will never thirst again.” Don’t reach for temporary relieve, because it leaves you feeling even more hollow, reach for the living water.

Instead of focusing what you don’t want, focus on something you want. Whenever you focus on something you want, you get more of it. Get the right focus! Eg. I want to be an Honourable father, faithful husband, faithful servant to God, man of integrity and character, I want to make God proud.

The more I love God, the more i want to make Him proud. Though you may stumble, you will not be cast out.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1

Renewing of the mind = action refocusing, have a better relationship with God.
The less appetite you have for things for the flesh. it is not in your strength you can do it, but through the righteousness of Christ, you can do it.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:5-6

Neuroscience = the mind is not actually your brain. The mind is your thoughts and feelings, they are not “matters”.

Your mind can be renewed so that it can change your brain. The thoughts that you think, things you focus on, can overwhelmingly change the structure of the brain, hormones, electron flowing, chemical firing and even your genetic code expression.

If you have too much sugar/temptation, your organs desensitize towards sugar level. Excessive sugar penetrates the blood, and your blood is petrified. Therefore, it needs a “transfusion”.

God gave up His life blood, so that He can transfuse His blood into you, so that you can live.

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Hebrews 9:22

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace Ephesians 1:7

This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:28

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; The old has gone, the new is here. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.
Psalms 121:1-2
