Discipleship

29 June 2013 Service – Phil Pringle

19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. John 5:19

Discipleship is about being a follower which means I’m behind someone and someone is in front of me.

Most of us have in us, a deep resistance to surrender the direction of our life to anybody else. That’s something inside of us to actually be obedient to, like your wife or husband.

When you put God first, you’re being a disciple. Jesus challenged this moment by asking people to be His disciples. One of them said, “let me go bury my father, let me first go say farewell, let me first go look at the lamb I purchase.”

Discipleship is never convenient, but a commitment.
We need to move from a position from Savior to Lord. I’m moving to place where the devil can’t attack me, I don’t need so much saving because I’m obedient to God and I gain authority to life.

You can’t believe in Jesus but don’t believe in His promises. “I’m happy to have you in my life, but may not believe you have my interest in my heart enough for me to surrender to you.”

6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:6 NLT

What you’ve got planned for you, is only one millionth of the idea of what God has for you in your life.

Story of David:
People were loving David more than Saul, so Saul wanted to get rid of David. So David fled to the city of Priests, Nob. And he went to the Holy Place and ate the bread which was generally forbidden, and then went to Gath. When they told the king that he was there, so David pretended he was insane. Then he went to a cave called Adullam’s cave. His men started joining him. Discontent and people in trouble ended up going to the cave. He turned them into a small army. Then he went to the forests of the Hereth. David went up and helped a besieged people.

David constantly keeps referring to God. One thing I desired that I may dwell in the house of God. David constantly committed himself to The Lord. You would have presumed the people of Keliah were so thankful that they would take care of David.

12 Now these were the men who came to David at Ziklag while he was still a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men, helpers in the war, 2 armed with bows, using both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows with the bow. They were of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren. 1 Chronicles 12:1-2

More and more people began to join with David. This the beginning of the formation of a great army.

10 Qualities of the army that came to him:

#1 Skillful
8 Some Gadites joined David at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for battle, who could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as gazelles on the mountains 1 Chronicles 12:8

God is going to come through for us on this!

How do you get trained for battle? By being in a battle! You are never going to learn how to fight until you’re trading punches with the devil. Fighting the good fight of faith, you will win, if you just put up a fight.

They had faces like faces of a lion. It means you’re immovable, unshakeable. You are swift as a gazelle, you’re skipping over mountains! When a mountain comes on you, you’re skipping over them.

#2 Courageous
Mentally tough and determined.  Not intimdated but courageous in the face of danger.

#3 Swift people

#4 Ever ready all ready soldiers
15 These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed all its banks; and they put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west. 1 Chronicles 12:15.

If you wait for the perfect conditions to come, you’ll never get anything done.

God told Israel to possess Canaan, the river Jordan was flooded. These are not your convenient soldiers.

#5 United in the vision of their leader
18 Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said:
“We are yours, O David;
We are on your side, O son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
And peace to your helpers!
For your God helps you.”
So David received them, and made them captains of the troop.
1 Chronicles 12:18

#6 Insightful prophetic people

32 of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command; 1 Chronicles 12:32

This great army of men and women started gathering to him.

#7 People who go out to battle
33 of Zebulun there were fifty thousand who went out to battle, expert in war with all weapons of war, stouthearted men who could keep ranks; 1 Chronicles 12:33

Not waiting for the battle to come to then to act.

Don’t wait for a crisis before you start praying and tithing. Be ahead of the game

#8 Multi-purpose warriors
Good with all weapons with all situations. They will be wise and innocent at the same time to navigate people.

#9 Strong-hearted man. Stout hearted personality. Don’t easily give up.

#10 They could keep rank
Authority flows down the line of authority, not friendship.
Some people want Jesus to be their friend, but not their Lord. The line of authority comes through our leaders in our lives.

They held the line when times get tough. We don’t break rank. Its not at the expense of our corporate relationship with Jesus.

David encouraged his soul in The Lord.
27 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked came against me
To eat up my flesh,
My enemies and foes,
They stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.
4 One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple.
5 For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.
Psalms 27:1-5

Stand up on the inside, you will be alright. Faith is what connects us to the power of God! When you go into anxiety, you disconnect yourself from God.

Rise up O soul, God will get you through this! He knew that once He was in faith, He would be able to hear from God. Right here demonstrate discipleship and Lordship at its finest. Cos right now he was got one of the best armies in the area, but He still inquired of The Lord. Before he assumed he could accomplish anything, he stopped and asked God for direction. He was willing to surrender the direction of his life to God.

And then mercy opened the door of him. What looked like it was going to be the worse day of his life, he actually got back more than what he initially had.

We need to understand that God has a plan in our worse days. There is a plan behind a plan we see all the time. We will understand the victory and the dominion.

And if you ask God to reveal to you the plan he will show you all the strategies and resources and everything you need to take back what the devil had stolen from you!

You are conqueror and a far above all principalities and powers! While we’re looking at what we’ve lost, God is actually looking at what we can get back. My cup overflows.
