Living A Life Of Honour

19 May 2013 Discipleship Meeting – Lily Yong

10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; Col 1:10

11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, 2 Thess 1:11

What is honour?
Respect, esteem, dignity, glory, reverence.

12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pet 2:12

Since you were precious in My sight,
You have been honored,
And I have loved you;
Therefore I will give men for you,
And people for your life.
Isa 43:4

However we must recognise there are two types of honour.
#1 Honour from man
#2 Honour from God

41 “I do not receive honor from men. 44 How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? Jn 5:41,44

In this world we are honourable when we have power, riches, authority, etc.
There is nothing wrong with that, but the system of the world is different from the system of the Kingdom of God.

The path to honour for every disciple is very different from the world!
Eg Satan tempting Jesus giving him the whole world. Then Jesus would have the honour of the world but not the honour of God!

There are 5 steps to live an honourable life:

1) H: Humility

Humility is not the denial of your strengths but your acknowledgment of your weaknesses!

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; Philp 2:5-12

Humbled himself and became obedient.

Before honour comes humility!

A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor. Prov 29:23

It is not good to show partiality to the wicked, Or to overthrow the righteous in judgment. Prov 18:5

By humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches and honor and life. Prov 22:4
2) O: Obedience
Jesus gave honour to his father through his obedience.

To receive honour, you must first give honor.

To who?
A. God
How? With our words! Through our Thanksgiving! Through our praise. Through our giving. With our time (eg keep the Sabbath Holy!). With our lifestyle.

B. Your Parents!
16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Deut 5:16

Honour is the attitude of your heart. Even if you disagree with your parents, you should still be honouring in your heart, in your tone and gesture.

C. Spouse
7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Pet 3:7

D. Spiritual leaders
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 1 Thess 5:12-13

17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 1 Tim 5:17

Honour in Greek: Ti-me –  also means monetary value

D. Those who are in authority
17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. 1 Pet 2:17

We should be honouring to all! As we are created in the image and likeness of God.

3) N: be Noble
Don’t live a double standard lifestyle!
12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pet 2:12

16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 1 Pet 3:16

4) O: Orderly or Organised
Be highly efficient!
Have excellence in everything you do!
We all represent organisations!
No one respects an inefficient organisation..

11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing. 1 Thess 4:11-12

5) R:  Responsible
6 And he said to him, “Look now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.” 1 Sam 9:6

Are you responsible to your words, your bond, your promise?
Responsible : Consider others before your own needs and desires.
The path for honour for us may not be easy at times.

6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 1 Pet 1:6-7

17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 2 Cor 4:17
