Who Is A Disciple?
03 Mar 2013 Discipleship Meeting – Lily Yong
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Mtt4:17-19
We receive our formal education through schooling. But we receive informal education through discipleship. It is not a programme or degree, it is a lifestyle!
Why is discipleship important?? Because teaching the head will not heal the heart.
Discipleship cannot be forced! It is in this process where our values are challenged, our atititudes and mindsets transformed!
But are you ready? Who is really a disciple?
A disciple is a trained worker, quick to do the works of God. Not only can he work, he does so with a christ-like attitude.
Who is God looking for?
2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Tim 2:2 – faithful and able man!
Are you ready?? Know by asking yourself:
#1 Are you willing to change?
You must be willing to let go of your past achievements, and trade your old ways for the calling of God in your life!
There is no future in the past, and no past in the future.
#2 Are you willing to follow?
21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. Matt 4:21-22
Will you leave your nets and follow him?
#3 Are you willing to learn?
5 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Matt 5:1
Your attitude will affect your learning.
#4 Are you willing to participate?
5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Mtt10:5-7
Don’t be too busy with your own plans, avail yourself!
It’s good to be ‘on the ball’, but don’t be on the wrong ball.
If the answer to any of the questions above is “No” or “Not sure”, then you need to re-evaluate your attitude!
If you are not willing to change then you will not grow, improve and be a better person to fulfill God’s will for your life!
